This way if being a comedian didn't work out he had a solid career to fall back on.

When Danny confronts Joey, they remember the day when they became friends in the 5th grade in 1968, when they protected each other. Per the flashback, it was recess, and young Danny was sitting on a bench with a nosebleed, when their teacher, Ms. Borland ordered young Joey to sit there as well, for causing mischief. The class bully (who was implied to have caused Danny's nosebleed) then approached the two, and started to harass Danny, but Joey drove him off with some insults from his joke book. The bully returned a moment later with Ms. Borland, who was prepared to call Joey's parents, but Danny covered for him. Ms. Borland accepted Danny's word without question, as he was the teacher's pet, and she took the bully to the principal's office, revealing his name to be Sheldon, much to Danny and Joey's amusement.
But since they started working together more, they have become good friends, and it is making Danny feel left out because lately, Joey has been taking Danny for granted. Joey ending up on Star Search was a huge deal because Star Search was the business back in the day. His routine about surfers playing ice hockey was not just funny, it was clever.
